The Buccaneers have won four of the last seven meetings in the series, including a 31-6 playoff victory in Tampa following the 2002 season. San Francisco holds a big advantage in the all-time series, winning 15 of the 19 regular season meetings. Tampa Bay’s first road win was a 24-23 victory at Candlestick Park in 1980. Last season, the Buccaneers gained their second road victory, as they were able to shut out the 49ers for the first time in the series with a 21-0 victory in San Francisco. It was also the first time since October 9, 1977, that the 49ers had been shut out at home. The other two Buccaneers regular season win’s against San Francisco came in a 13-6 victory in the 1997 season opener at Houlihan’s Stadium and a 35-3 win at Raymond James in 2004. The Buccaneers captured the lone postseason meeting with the 31-6 win in a 2002 NFC Divisional playoff game on the way to their first Super Bowl title.

That stretch has included Buccaneer wins in 1991 and 1994 in Tampa, and a 31-28 victory in 1997 in Indianapolis. Tampa Bay and Indianapolis face each other for the first time since 2007, when the Colts defeated the Buccaneers after racing out to a 30-7 lead. The Colts, located in Baltimore at the time, won the first-ever meeting between the franchises, 42-17, in Baltimore, in 1976. Tampa Bay won the next meeting in 1979, knocking off the Colts in Baltimore, 29-26, in overtime. The Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984, and have won six of the nine meetings since that time. Tampa Bay is 2-3 at home and 2-4 away all-time against the Colts.

Monday, October 6, 2003.

It’s a day that has been etched into football history as the day the Tampa Bay Buccaneers squandered a 21-point late 4th quarter lead to Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. But for me, it’s a day of few football memories.

I was in high school at the time. There were papers and tests to worry about—not to mention— 7:30 a.m. classes. So when Ronde Barber’s 29-yard interception return for a touchdown extended the Bucs lead to 35-14 with 5:09 remaining, I fell into a classic blunder. Not the “Princess Bride” kind, but a devastating one none the less. I assumed Tampa Bay was going to win and went to bed. Maybe Bucs players did the same thing.

The Classic Blunder

One thing’s for sure, I didn’t expect to see a giant “L” next to the box score when I looked at the morning’s newspaper. I felt ill; and not just because Tampa lost, but because I had missed out on watching something extraordinary. Amazing feats like that rarely happen, although most Tampa Bay area fans can say they witnessed a comeback of equal proportions Wednesday night with the Tampa Bay Rays. It’s games like these that transform sports into something more – into a religious activity, perhaps. Think about it. Fans congregate to a sporting event to praise and glorify their favorite teams. We pray our team makes a fourth-down stand and we put faith in players to step up and play to their potential. And yes, at times, we even see some lukewarm fans converting from one religion (team) to another.

I pray this Monday night will be different. Indianapolis is without its field general, but that doesn’t mean this team is a cupcake. Defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis have consistently been among the lead leaders in sacks and forced fumbles since 2004. They may be the best defensive end combo in the NFL today. Additionally, Peyton Manning may not be under center, but the offense line that did such a tremendous job protecting him all these years is healthy. Expect the Colts coaching staff to be safe with whomever they decide to start at quarterback – presumably Curtis Painter – but don’t assume Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, and Austin Collie won’t be heavily involved in the offense. We all know what happens when someone assumes. Here are some more matchups to watch in Monday’s game.

Tampa Bay’s first half scoring: Is it too much to ask for a first quarter touchdown? In three games, they have one, and that one occurred on an Aqib Talib interception return for a touchdown. They have looked sluggish early in the game and still haven’t produced a sustained drive in the first quarter. It is also disconcerting that Josh Freeman has looked disconnected from his wide receivers early and often. There have been too many over-thrown or under-thrown passes, and well as a lack of zip on the balls he’s thrown.

How will the loss of safety Cody Grimm impact the Bucs secondary? Grimm was placed on injured reserve after tearing ligaments in his knee during Sunday’s game versus the Falcons. Matt Ryan took full advantage of his absence, throwing for 149 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter alone. Granted, Tampa Bay’s secondary won’t be tested as much this week with Painter under center, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Indianapolis runs a couple deep routes early to test the awareness of free safety plug-in Corey Lynch.

Count on a low-scoring affair in this one. Tampa Bay hasn’t shown the ability on offense to start out strong and I expect a heavy dose of running backs Joseph Addai and rookie Delone Carter from Indianapolis early on. I expect the offensive line to have their hands full all night as they deal with constant pressure from Freeney, Mathis, and timely blitzing from the Colts secondary. Tampa Bay should plan on running screens and draws to counter-act the heavy pass rush. Defensively, forcing Painter into turnovers and hurried throws will be a key to winning the game. Overall, my prediction is a 17-13 Tampa Bay victory. Be sure not a fall asleep until the final whistle blows with this game.

The Buccaneers have won seven of the last ten and four consecutive meetings with Minnesota, but the Vikings lead the all-time series 31-20. Tampa Bay also owns an 8-1 record over the last nine games played in Tampa. The series started in 1977, when Tampa Bay joined the NFC Central Division. Minnesota won, 9-3, at Tampa Stadium in 1977 before the Bucs upset the Vikings, 16-10, at Metropolitan Stadium in 1978. That win was just the third in franchise history and the first against a divisional opponent. Tampa Bay also won, 12-10, at the Met the following year en route to its first division title, breaking Minnesota’s six-year run as NFC Central champs. The Vikings won 10 of 12 contests from 1984-1989, but the series has tightened up in recent years. Tampa Bay and Minnesota split the season series in the final nine years (1993-2001) the two teams were in the NFC Central. The Bucs’ 41-13 decision in 2000 was the most lopsided victory for Tampa Bay in the long series; Minnesota’s most dominant win came in a 45-13 win in 1986. Tampa Bay posted 41 points in consecutive home wins against the Vikings in 2000 and 2001 and scored 38 points in the 2002 meeting, a 38-24 win. Tampa’s 24-13 victory at Minnesota in 2005 and 19-13 victory at Tampa in 2008 made it four-in-a-row over the Vikings.

Last Sunday’s game against Detroit was disappointing. Not because I predicted the Lions to win and they did, but disappointing that Tampa Bay wasn’t able to put up much of a fight. The 27-20 Lions victory was not as close as the score would indicate. Tampa was bullied up front and quarterback Matthew Stafford was allowed to stand unfazed in the pocket far too much. That can’t happen this week against Minnesota, even with veteran Donovan McNabb under center. Here are a few matchups the Bucs need to focus on if they want to come home with a victory this week.

Containing Adrian Peterson: You don’t need to be a savvy analyst to know that Peterson IS the Vikings offense. He has ranked in the top 10 in rushing attempts for the last three years and has recently developed into a nice pass-catcher, totaling 79 receptions over the past two seasons. Last week versus San Diego, McNabb struggled mightily. He completed just seven passes for 39 yards and looked flustered most of the game. San Diego loaded the box early and often, and dared McNabb to beat their secondary. He showed over and over that he couldn’t. With eight or more players up front, Peterson struggled to find running room and it forced Minnesota into many long third-downs.

The Bucs will need to contain Adrian Peterson Sunday. (Associated Press)

The Bucs defense needs to follow this example. Their main focus should be containing Peterson, forcing him to run side-to-side rather than straight up the middle. Look for Tampa Bay to stack the box and blitz McNabb. If they can hold Peterson to fewer than 100 yards and bait McNabb into throwing often, expect Tampa Bay to force turnovers and more than likely be on the winning side.

Conversely, LeGarrette Blount needs to get the ball. It is inexcusable for a number one running back to get the ball only five times. Earnest Graham is a good change of pace back, but he shouldn’t handle the ball twice as much as Blount. Count on OC Greg Olson to call several plays for LeGarrette going forward.

Donald Penn vs. Jared Allen: The second-most vital player to contain on Minnesota is Pro-Bowl defensive end Jared Allen. He has made a habit of harassing quarterbacks all game and has accumulated at least 11 sacks each of the last four seasons. Left tackle Donald Penn will definitely have his hands full, but Penn does have something on his side.

Donald Penn will have his hands full guarding Pro Bowl DE Jared Allen. (Associated Press)

After graduating from Utah State, he began his career as an undrafted free agent on the Vikings practice squad. This will be his first game back in Minnesota. Earlier in the week, Penn said he still has a chip on his shoulder. Expect his emotions to be riding high as he returns to the team that didn’t give him a chance five years ago.

Overall, count on this one being a close game throughout. I expect both teams to run often, while mixing in play-action passes sparingly. The Vikings secondary allowed Philip Rivers to throw for 335 yards, so perhaps Josh Freeman won’t be afraid to take a few stabs downfield to Mike Williams and Arrelious Benn. In his lone game versus Tampa Bay in 2008, Adrian Peterson ran for 85 yards and zero touchdowns. I would be thrilled if the Bucs held him to that Sunday. Look for Blount to carry a bigger load – 80 yards and a touchdown would be nice. Again, this one will be close, but I predict Tampa Bay winning on a late field goal 23-20.

Tampa also prevailed 20-10 in a wildcard playoff win in Tampa during the 1997 season. The teams first met in 1977, a 16-7 Lions victory at the Silverdome. The Bucs’ first win over the Lions came in the 1979 season opener, a 31-16 triumph that propelled Tampa Bay to its first NFC Central title. Two years later, the Bucs captured their second division crown with a 20-17 win at Detroit on the season’s final Sunday. The series see-sawed throughout the 1980s, with the Lions holding a 10-9 edge. Detroit went on a five-game streak, starting in 1994. The Bucs ended the streak in 1997 with a 24-17 win in Pontiac. Later that year, Tampa Bay said farewell to Tampa Stadium with a 20-10 Wild Card victory over the Lions before 73,361 fans. Tampa Bay had won the previous meeting between the two teams in 2008, but lost last season in Tampa, 23-20.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH
Bucs O-Line vs. Lions D-Line
Last season the Bucs offensive line surrendered 30 sacks, the Lions defense sacked opposing QB’s 44 times. The Bucs were without Jeff Faine, Davin Joseph and Jeremy Trueblood was not starting when the Lions beat the Bucs in overtime. Mark Dominik has shelled out $110 million in contracts with roughly $39 million guaranteed to LT Donald Penn, RG Joseph and RT Trueblood over the past two off-seasons to protect Freeman, the face of the franchise.

With new offensive line coach Pat Morris, in tow. This is a critical unit to watch in the season opener. Especially after a less than stellar pre-season performance, where they allowed far too much pressure and seldom moved the LOS.

The most intriguing battle however will be Trueblood vs. Lions DE Cliff Avril.Trueblood has struggled against speed rushers in the past. Avril a speed rusher extraordinaire could give Trueblood fits in his attempt to protect Freeman.

Aqib Talib vs. Calvin Johnson
Johnson had 10 catches for 152-yards and 1 touchdown against the Talibless Bucs in last years meeting. Talib who’s not played in a game since week 12 of 2010 after being placed on injured reserve will be tested by the athletic Johnson.

This is strength versus strength for both teams. Talib and Johnson both represent the best player for their respective teams on defense and offense. Which ever player, gets the best of the other goes along way in helping decide the outcome of this game.

Josh Freeman vs. Lions Secondary
Last year, Freeman led the Buccaneers to 10 wins, becoming the first quarterback under the age of 23 to win at least 10 games since 2004 (Ben Roethlisberger). Seven of Freeman’s 13 career victories have been fourth-quarter comeback or OT wins. Freeman had a career-best 95.9 passer rating in 2010, the sixth-highest mark in the NFL. His 3,451 passing yards last year were the fourth-most in team history and he joined Brad Johnson as the only Bucs to pass for at least 3,000 yards, 20 TDs (25) and fewer than 10 interceptions (6) in a season.

With the Lions top interceptor from last season CB Alphonso Smith out. This should provide the Bucs deep receiving corps some mismatch opportunities. Don’t be too surprised to see Dezmon Briscoe become an early favorite of Freeman with Mike Williams garnering extra attention.

INJURY REPORT

Tampa Bay hosts the Dolphins, marking the 18th time in the last 19 seasons that the two teams square off in the preseason. The Bucs and Dolphins are meeting for the 26th time in the preseason, the most meetings for either team in the preseason. Miami leads the series 16-9, but Tampa Bay has won five of the last nine meetings. The first preseason contest between the two teams was on August 21, 1976, a 28-21 Miami win in Tampa.

The Bucs have claimed wins in 1984, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008. During the regular season, Miami leads the all-time series 5-4, with Tampa Bay winning three of the last four meetings. The Buccaneers won 27-13 in 2005 in Tampa, 16-13 in 2000 at Miami and 31-21 in 1997 in Tampa. The Buccaneers also won, 23-17, in 1982 in Tampa.

The first meeting between the two clubs was in the Bucs’ first season in 1976, a 23-20 Miami win in Tampa. The Dolphins also captured wins in 1985 (41-38 in Miami), 1988 (17-14 in Tampa), in 1991 (33-14 in Miami) and 2009 (25-23 in Miami).

HOMEGROWN TALENT
The Buccaneers starting lineup currently contains 19 players that began their playing careers with the team. That is to say, of the 22 players listed as first string on the Buccaneers depth chart, only three players debuted in a regular-season game with a different team (C Jeff Faine, TE Kellen Winslow, S Sean Jones). In fact, of those 19 players to first appear with the Buccaneers in a regular-season game, 15 were originally drafted or signed by Tampa Bay and have appeared exclusively on the Buccaneers roster during their careers.

In all, the Buccaneers have 51 players on the current 90-man roster that were either drafted or originally signed by Tampa Bay and have only appeared on Tampa Bay’s roster. Though free agency grabs the headlines, a few organizations have proven that drafting and developing talent, followed by re-signing that talent, is the best way to have sustained success. As a prime example, in 2010, three of the traditionally most successful teams in the league – including the season’s Super Bowl XLV Champion Green Bay Packers – featured 18 or more usual starters who had spent their entire career with the team.

COLTS’, PACKERS’ AND STEELERS’ 22 STARTERS FROM 2010

Players To Watch
Run Defense
After allowing 200-yards last week against the Patriots on the ground. The run defense needs to show marked improvement. Whether it is by scheme, individual players or a combination of both, it’s been two years and counting that the defense has leaked like a sieve. Run defense is a mentality, which has to be forced at times. It’s about playing assignment sound fundamental football. Quality defensive teams stop the run first, by staying in their gaps and controlling the line-of-scrimmage.

Offensive line
After underwhelming last week against a ferocious assault by the Pats defense, look for the line to get some redemption. From penalties to blown assignments this unit needs to pick up the intensity level and begin to give Freeman a clean pocket to throw out of while opening some holes in the running game.

Back-up CB Myron Lewis & EJ Biggers
With reports surfacing that Aqib Talib will be suspended for a minimum of at least four games. Either Lewis or Biggers needs to come up big to fill the potential void that will be left in the early part of the season. Biggers is the odds on favorite at this point, after subbing for Talib for six games last years. But the team is high on Lewis, who’s been battling injury issues thus far in game, but will see his first action of this pre-season tonight.

Players To Watch
DE Kyle Moore
After breaking out in week one of the pre-season Moore needs to have another stellar game to continue his efforts in securing a roster spot. With 2 sacks and countless pressure look for more Moore against the Patriots.

Backup Offensive linemen
Last week Demar Dotson, Brandon Carter and James Lee all underwhelmed in live action. If the trend continues don’t be surprised to see Mark Dominik combing through the waiver wire as players begin to get released in the coming weeks. From penalties to blown assignments this trio needs to rebound in a hurry.

MLB Derrell Smith
All the talk at the mike backer position has been centered on rookie Mason Foster and third year pro Tyrone McKenzie. But it was Smith who was consistently around the football in his Buccaneer debut. The team typically keeps 7 linebackers on the active roster during the season. With another solid showing Smith could play himself into a roster spot as the Bucs look for legitimate developmental type player and special teams standout.

The teams last met in 2010 when they faced-off at Raymond James Stadium. The Buccaneers lead the series 4-1, as Tampa Bay has won the last three meetings. The first preseason contest between the two teams was on August 23, 1991, a 20-7 Buccaneers victory in Tampa. The Bucs have also claimed wins in 1999, 2000 and 2010.

During the regular season, the all-time series is all square at five games apiece, as Tampa Bay has won the last three meetings. The Buccaneers won 30-27 in overtime at Kansas City in 2008, 17-10 in 1999 at Raymond James Stadium, 3-0 in 1979 in Tampa and 30-13 at Kansas City in 1978. The Chiefs captured victories in 1976 (28-19 in Tampa), 1981 (19-10 in Kansas City), 1984 (24-20 in Kansas City), 1986 (27-20 in Kansas City) and 1993 (27-3 in Tampa).

Up Next: Tampa Bay vs. New England (8/18), Kansas City at Baltimore (8/19

2011 SLATE
The Buccaneers’ 2011 schedule will feature eight games against teams that finished the 2010 season with a .500 record or better, including seven games against teams that made the 2010 playoffs. Tampa Bay will face off against the NFC North and AFC South, as well as the Dallas Cowboys (home) of the NFC East and the NFC West’s San Francisco 49ers (away). The schedule is based on a formula that was implemented with realignment in 2002. It includes home and away games against the three divisional opponents, four games against teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle, 5

four games against teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle and two intraconference games based on the prior year’s standings against teams from the same conference divisions that are not scheduled to play that season.

Players To Watch
Adrian Clayborn & Da’Quan Bowers
Both players have been given high praise for there intensity and work ethic in camp, but tonight will be their first test. Going against a physical Chiefs line the team should be able to get a glimpse of what it’s first two draft picks can do. It will also be a chance to see how Millard’s troops due against a very good running team.

The Battle at MLB
It was supposed to be an open competition, but rookie Mason Foster has already been given the green light in the teams’ base defense. In sub packages SAM backer Quincy Black will move to the MIKE and play in nickel and Redskin groupings. Essentially Tyrone McKenzie is fighting for playing time and a chance to win the starting spot ahead of Foster this pre-season.

Young Secondary
With the team still unsure of how the whole Aqib Talib situation is going to play out and when exactly the league will reinstate Tanard Jackson it needs cornerbacks EJ Biggers, Myron Lewis and Anthony Gaitor along with safeties Cody Grimm, Larry Asante and Ahmad Black to really show they can fill the void if one of the top players in the secondary succumbs to an injury or is out for a prolonged period of time.

Tampa Bay has won four of the last seven meetings, including five of the last seven road contests in the series. New Orleans leads the all-time series 22-15, and leads the series at 9-8 as NFC South rivals. The teams split the series last year, with New Orleans winning in Tampa in Week 11 and the Buccaneers prevailing at the Superdome in Week 16. The Buccaneers swept both contests in 2005 and 2007 after splitting in 2008, including a 10-3 victory in 2005 in a road contest played in Baton Rouge and a 27-13 in the 2005 regular season home finale, a victory that clinched the NFC South title for the Buccaneers. Prior to joining the NFC South, Tampa Bay had claimed three of the previous four meetings, including wins in both 1999 and 2001. The Bucs won the first game between the two clubs, a 33-14 triumph at the Superdome in 1977. Tampa Bay tied an NFL record, which has since been broken, by returning three interceptions for touchdowns. The victory marked the Bucs’ first regular season win after 26 consecutive losses. More than 8,000 fans greeted the team upon its return to One Buccaneer Place. Tampa Bay and New Orleans split the next four meetings, each winning two straight on the other team’s turf before the Saints assembled a six-game winning streak.

GOING DEEP
After finishing the 2009 season ranked 20th with 40 pass completions of 20+ yards, five of which resulted in touchdowns, the Buccaneers, led by QB Josh Freeman already have 46 completions of 20+ yards in 2010 with 10 of those going for scores. The team currently is tied for ninth-most pass completions of 20+ yards and tied for the second-most 20+ yard touchdown passes in the NFC. From 2000-09, the Bucs averaged just 37 receptions of 20 or more yards per season and are on pace for 49 this season.

The Buccaneers are also one of eight teams in the NFL, and one of three teams in the NFC, to have five different players catch a pass of 40+ yards (San Diego, 8; Oakland, 7; Baltimore, Cleveland and Seattle, 6; Jacksonville and New Orleans, 5) this season.

Players To Watch
Legarrette Blount
Looking for a spark in the running game, the Buccaneers turned to undrafted rookie free agent RB LeGarrette Blount. Blount answered, providing an immediate impact, as he ranks among the league leaders in rushing for rookie running backs and has been nominated for Rookie of the Week four times.

He is currently tied for first in touchdowns (6), first in rushing yards (941), second in yards per carry (5.2) and first in yards per game (78.4) among rookie running backs. He also has the second, third and fourth longest rush (53, 48, 48 yards) of any rookie this season.

Since receiving the lions share of carries starting in week seven, Blount has amassed 911 rushing yards on 184 carries for an average of 4.95 yards per carry and five touchdowns for an a average of 91 yards per game.

Josh Freeman
This season, Freeman has been Mr. Third-Down, completing 78 of 130 pass attempts for 910 yards, five touchdowns and a completion percentage of 60% with one interception and a quarterback rating of 90.9. Of those 78 completions 49 have resulted in the Bucs picking up a first down. Freeman also currently ranks second in the NFC, and fourth in the NFL in fourth quarter passer rating (96.4) with a minimum of 30 attempts. His six interceptions are tied for the fewest in the NFL

Freeman has led the team to convert at least 40.0 percent of their third-down attempts in 11 of their 15 games, with five consecutive to start the season. It marked the first time in franchise history the team has had five consecutive games with at least a 40.0 percent third-down conversion rate.

On the year, he currently ranks sixth in the NFC in third down passer rating and has thrown just one interception on a third down play. His legs have been just as productive on third downs, as 25 of Freeman’s 64 runs this year have come on third down, with 19 of those resulting in first downs. Seven of his 19 third down scrambles have come on third-and-nine or longer. In just 15 games, Freeman has already converted five third-and-fours, seven third-and-one’s, two third-and-11s, two third-and-nine’s, a third-and-16, a third-and seven and a third-and-three by running.

Mike Williams
In this year’s draft, 12 wide receivers were taken ahead of 2010 fourth-round draft pick (101st overall) WR Mike Williams. Though Williams wasn’t drafted highly, his talent and production on the field is leading some experts to consider him the “steal of the draft” and a possible Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate. Through his first 14 games as a pro, Williams has already been up for NFL Rookie of the Week five times, all but one after a Buccaneers victory.

Williams currently has the thirteenth-most receiving yards in the NFC and 20th most in the NFL. He also ranks tied for sixth in 25-plus yard receptions, in the NFL and 14th in YAC amongst receivers. Among rookie receivers, Williams is currently first in receptions (61), first in receiving yards (924) and first in receiving touchdowns (10). He is the only rookie in Buccaneers history to have 10+ receptions, 100+ receiving yards and 2+ touchdowns in first three games of career. He currently sits at number three for receptions by a Buccaneer rookie receiver, second in receiving yards, and in first with seven receiving touchdowns as a rookie.

Buc Central’s Prognostication:
As always we are not advocating gambling based on our views of the game, especially considering we typically are inclined to make such educated guesses using are heart rather the any rational thought applied to picking. We are merely giving an opinion of who we think has the best chance at securing a victory.
