Game Preview: Bucs vs Eagles

by Staff Report on October 10, 2009

With Tampa Bay’s 23-21 victory in 2006, the Buccaneers have won five of the past seven meetings and evened the all-time series 5-5 in the regular season. The teams are also even at 2-2 in the postseason including arguably the biggest win in Buccaneers history, a 27-10 victory in the 2002 NFC Championship game. The two teams first met in 1977 in Philadelphia, a 13-3 Eagles win. Philadelphia also grabbed regular season victories in 1981 (20-10 in Philadelphia), 1988 (41-14 in Tampa), 2001 (17-13 in Tampa) and 2002 (20-10 in Philadelphia). The Bucs recorded their first win over Philadelphia in Tampa in 1991 with a 14-13 victory and also earned victories in 1995 (21-6 in Philadelphia) and 1999 (19-5 in Philadelphia). In the inaugural game played at Lincoln Financial Field Tampa Bay took a 17-0 season-opening win at Philadelphia (9/8/03) on Monday Night Football.

Key Match-Ups
Josh Johnson vs Blitz
Making just his second career start, second year pro Josh Johnson will have his hands full reading the zone blitz packages by first year defensive coordinator Sean McDermott. The Eagles will attempt to confuse and harass Johnson into mistakes and force the action. The young signal caller, must be at the top of his game for the Bucs to have a chance at winning this Sunday.

Gaines Adams vs Jason Peters
After finally breaking out of his early season funk, Adams showcased what he’s capable of doing if his mind is in the right place. Going against a pro-bowl caliber left tackle in Peters, Adams will have to step his game up another notch. Peters gave up  13.5 sacks in Buffalo last season, but has been a rock through the Eagles first three games since being traded.

Bucs Secondary vs Eagles  Receivers
The Eagles are blessed with two speed demons in DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, with Aqib Talib susceptible to double moves looks for the Eagles to aggressively attack Talib when they get him isolated one-on-one. If the Bucs secondary can man up and limit big plays they have a chance to keep the game within reach.

Buc Central’s Prognostication:
As always we are not advocating gambling based on our views of the game, especially considering we typically are inclined to make such educated guesses using are heart rather the any rational thought applied to picking. We are merely giving an opinion of who we think has the best chance at securing a victory.
