Game Preview: Pre-Season Week 2 Bucs vs Patriots

by Roland Johnson on August 18, 2011

The Buccaneers and Patriots have met eight times in the preseason, with Tampa Bay winning each of the last seven contests. This year’s meeting is the seventh in Tampa, with the Bucs owning a 5-1 mark at home in the series.

During the regular season, New England leads the series 5-2. The Buccaneers won, 21-16, at New England in the 2000 season opener. The Buccaneers also won, 27-7, in 1997 in Tampa. The first meeting between the two clubs was in the Bucs’ first season in 1976, a 31-14 New England win in Tampa. The Patriots also captured wins in 1985 (32-14 in Tampa), 1988 (10-7 in overtime in New England), 2005 (28-0 in New England) and their last meeting in 2009 (35-7 in London).

Players To Watch
DE Kyle Moore
After breaking out in week one of the pre-season Moore needs to have another stellar game to continue his efforts in securing a roster spot. With 2 sacks and countless pressure look for more Moore against the Patriots.

Backup Offensive linemen
Last week Demar Dotson, Brandon Carter and James Lee all underwhelmed in live action. If the trend continues don’t be surprised to see Mark Dominik combing through the waiver wire as players begin to get released in the coming weeks. From penalties to blown assignments this trio needs to rebound in a hurry.

MLB Derrell Smith
All the talk at the mike backer position has been centered on rookie Mason Foster and third year pro Tyrone McKenzie. But it was Smith who was consistently around the football in his Buccaneer debut. The team typically keeps 7 linebackers on the active roster during the season. With another solid showing Smith could play himself into a roster spot as the Bucs look for legitimate developmental type player and special teams standout.

Buc Central’s Prognostication:
As always we are not advocating gambling based on our views of the game, especially considering we typically are inclined to make such educated guesses using are heart rather the any rational thought applied to picking. We are merely giving an opinion of who we think has the best chance at securing a victory.
