Charlie Campbell Editor-in-Chief of PewterReport.com checked in with Mark Miller and David Moulton of ESPN Radio 770 AM in Fort Myers Thursday afternoon. One of the many topics discussed was that of OLB / DE Shawn Merriman, whom the Chargers placed on injured reserve earlier in the week.
With speculation running rampant, that once recovered the Chargers intentions are to release the oft-injured pass rusher. Campbell said in speaking with unnamed sources from within the hollowed halls of One Buc Place. That the team had a serious interest in Merriman at last years trade deadline and possibly looked into getting him on the cheap then.
Campbell thinks the Bucs, who are really hurting at the defensive end position. Interest might be mounting as they continue to be firmly planted at the bottom of the league in sacks, with four through four games.
The ability to get a player in his mid twenties that has shown in the past, some pass rush ability, albeit as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, who might just need a change of scenery. Might be a cheap alternative that could provide a spark for a stagnant pass rush.
However, the million dollar question becomes would general manager Mark Dominik take a chance on a player who hasn’t produced over the last few seasons and could possibly upset the chemistry of a young team?
