The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have traded TE Alex Smith to the New England Patriots today in exchange for an undisclosed pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Smith, 26, played four NFL seasons with the Buccaneers (05-08). The 6-foot-4-inch, 258-pound tight end was selected by the Bucs in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft out of Stanford. In four seasons with Tampa, Smith played in 58 games with 43 starts and caught 129 passes for 1,252 yards (9.7 avg.) and 11 touchdowns.
The recent trade for Kellen Winslow and the re-signing of Jereamy Stevens made Smith expendable, his biggest issues have been health and an inability to take that next step to further solidify himself as a top tier tight end.
